Happier feet are only a tap away. The importance of feet are often overlooked, but they are pivotal to an overall comfortable body. The good news is that you don’t need to pay for an expensive and short-lived spa day to make your feet happy. Here are some ways that you can give your feet the attention that they deserve.
1. Moisturize
Keep your feet soft and protected with a good moisturizer. Nobody enjoys walking around on feet that are cracking. We have moisture-rich creams that your feet will love like this Pedifix deep-healing foot cream.
2. Healthy Weight
Your feet are meant to support your entire body, but excessive force can exacerbate and cause issues like decreased circulation. In some instances, being overweight can lead to diabetes which can come with additional foot pain to navigate.
3. The Right Shoes
Having the right shoes is so important for healthy feet. In the summer you may see some people wearing flip flops and sandals. While your feet may like the feeling of the fresh air, they are not getting proper support. Wear shoes for the right occasion. If walking, wear walking shoes. If running, wear running shoes. Wear what is comfortable and will give your feet and entire body the appropriate support.
4. Additional Support
Sometimes, what your feet really need are comfortable insoles. We love the Spenco Total Support Insoles. The bottom of the foot should be making complete contact with the insole to help aid in overpronation. We have them in a range of sizes for men and women.
5. Hygiene
Give your feet some love by practicing good hygiene. Keep your nails trimmed straight and clean to avoid ingrown nails. Each time you shower or bathe, be sure your feet are getting cleaned well. If it’s difficult for you to bend down, you can get a foot scrubber. Be sure to dry your feet well after showering and then apply moisturizer.
6. Find the Right Socks
You may be surprised at how well a good pair of socks feel. Whether you need diabetic socks or nonstick slippers, your feet will thank you. Socks will make your shoes more comfortable and help prevent blisters and calluses.
7. Daily Stretches
You may know the importance of stretching your legs and arms, but don’t forget about the feet. You can stretch your feet by following a few of these moves. Your feet will be stronger and more flexible in movements if this is done consistently.
8. See a Podiatrist
If you are struggling with foot pain and nothing seems to help, reach out to a specialist. Podiatrists will be able to get to the root of what’s bothering you and provide some solutions that can make walking enjoyable again.
It’s easy to forget about foot care but taking care of your feet can go a long way! If you are in need of the products to do so, check out ACG Medical Supply’s catalog – we’ve got the products you need to keep those feet happy year-round.
Having a heart attack is serious and scary. Unfortunately, the worries don’t end for some as they recover. We have found that one of the best ways to overcome heart attack anxiety is to have a plan of recovery. These are what we believe to be the most important tips to keep in mind during the recovery of a major cardiac event.
Don’t Ignore Your Mental Health
Heart attack or not, your mental health is very important. The reason we bring this up is because many often report feelings of depression and anxiety after experiencing a heart attack. If this is you, know that it’s completely normal. If you find yourself feeling this way more than a couple of weeks after the incident, mention it to your doctor. Be patient with yourself and don’t be afraid to reach out to friends and family for social support.
Returning to Normal Activities Takes Time
You may feel like you want this to all be behind you and that may cause you to rush to doing activities at the same level as you were before. Realize that it will take time to get there, and it should, if you want to allow yourself to heal properly.
Now Is the Time to Cut Tobacco
You probably already know it, but now is the time to eliminate or drastically reduce tobacco usage. Your quality of life will be much better and your heart will thank you for it.
Diet is Key
Making healthier food choices can help aid in your recovery and provide a lasting change to your health. Choose foods low in sugar and sodium. Aim for a colorful plate with veggies, fruit, lean meat and whole grains. Planning your meals ahead of time will help you to make wise choices instead of a spur of the moment junk food choices.
The Benefits of Elevated Activity
You should be able to return to activities like dressing and taking care of your personal hygiene immediately. For elevated activity, you can start walking at a pace recommended by the doctor. Walking is extremely good for the heart, so keep up daily walking as you progress through recovery.
What to Do if You Think You’re Having Another Attack
Know the symptoms of a heart attack. They are chest pain, left arm pain, cold sweats, dizziness, jaw pain and fatigue. If you suspect an attack, you should immediately call 911. You may want to invest in an easy-to-use blood pressure monitor for peace of mind.
As You Think about Your New Lifestyle, Remember the ABCs of Heart Health
A: Take Aspirin (Amount suggested by your doctor)
B: Control Your Blood Pressure
C: Take Care of Your Cholesterol
If you or someone you love has recently suffered from a heart attack, we hope you find these tips helpful. Don’t hesitate to reach out to ACG Medical Supply for products to help make recovery easier for everyone. We’re here to help!
Have you or a loved one recently had surgery or are you planning to have surgery? Make recovery easier by having the tools you need to lessen pain and continue on with your activities of daily living. These ten products have helped many during their rehabilitation.
Hip replacement is major surgery. Make the recovery process easier on yourself by purchasing our hip replacement kit. It has everything you will need for dressing and bathing. Buying the kit will help to save you time and money.
We have all kinds of rolling walkers to choose from. Some of our walkers have baskets, fold small and are even able to be used while standing upright. Rolling walkers help you to regain balance and independence as you recover.
3. Commodes
It’s sometimes very difficult to get out of bed while you are recovering. It may make your recovery time take even longer if you are moving around too much. A bedside commode, like this 3-in-1, is easy to use and can be modified for other uses later on.
Sometimes, it’s hard enough to remember to take your vitamins. It can be even more challenging to remember medications after surgery. This top-of-the-line pill organizer comes with a daily alarm and will help you to manage your health more effectively.
5. Body Wedges
As you rehabilitate, you will want to find a different position to lay in. You won’t be able to put pressure on the area in the same way you did before. These wedges are great for elevating yourself to a comfortable state.
6. Ice Packs
Ice packs will help with swelling and help you to sleep. These packs also can be heated if what you need is heat therapy.
7. Braces
We have a variety of braces that can help give you support as you recover from surgery and as you go through physical therapy.
8. Bandages
We offer a wide range of wound dressings. Wounds typically need to be cleaned twice daily. You won’t want to have a shortage of clean bandages. There are self-adhering bandages, bandages with ionic silver and more for every need.
The type of cane one wants after surgery may vary, but many people like the offset aluminum cane because of the variety of colors and the comfortable latex-free design.
10. Reacher
You may not want to ask someone to hand you everything you need. Overexerting yourself may set you back in recovery. You can use this to pick up items off the floor or from a high shelf without having to bend or stretch. This is a safe alternative that fosters independence.
If you started off the new year in recovery from a procedure, don’t forget to get the supplies to help speed that process up! We have a vast selection of products to help you recover. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out for help.
New Year’s resolutions are for everyone, yet hardly anyone follows through with them. When considering your resolution for this year, remember to choose one that not only interests you but can contribute to your health and wellness for longevity. Here are some great ideas you can consider when choosing your 2020 resolution!
Make Life Easier
Are there things you keep doing that frustrate you, without thinking about an easier way to accomplish a frustrating task? Too often we let ourselves get annoyed with various tasks instead of thinking of a way to eliminate or minimize the annoyances. For example, if you seem to drop things on the floor or forget to grab an item before you crawl into bed, consider purchasing a reacher. It’s a simple and inexpensive fix. Consider other areas of your life that could be made easier with one simple fix.
Strengthen Your Brain
Keep your brain sharp by challenging it. This could be through games, puzzles or even reading. Maybe try reading something out of the ordinary or begin a puzzle that’s out of your comfort zone. Challenge yourself with something you enjoy doing.
Drink More Water
Our bodies need water to function at its best. It’s suggested that most people drink eight, eight-ounce glasses of water a day. You’ll find renewed energy by drinking more water, as it helps to flush out the things your body doesn’t need.
Speak Up for Yourself
Too often we decide to choose the path of least resistance. However, there comes a time when you should speak up for yourself and say what it is you want. Let this be the year where you let your voice be heard.
Mentoring
As an older adult, you have a lifetime’s worth of advice to share with someone. Consider joining a local mentoring program where you can share your knowledge and kindness with someone. They may even surprise you by teaching you a thing or two about yourself.
Start a Club
Start a club based on a hobby that you enjoy. It’s a great way to surround yourself with like-minded people while doing something you love.
Eat More Vegetables
You’ve been told to eat vegetables your whole life. If you’re not a veggie-lover, we’re sorry to say that making sure to eat your greens is still a necessity for a healthy life. You can try different ways of cooking them to make it fun!
Be Active
An active lifestyle makes for a happy lifestyle. Implement daily movement for at least twenty minutes to feel your best and keep your body strong. This could be through walking, biking or anything that gets your heart rate up!
Now that 2020 is officially here and underway, what are your New Year’s resolutions? Check out our catalog or reach out today to see what products we have to help you reach your goals.
Dry skin is a friend to no one and can be downright intolerable in the winter. It’s itchy and with frequent scratching comes bleeding. Thankfully, with a little extra care, you can give your skin the moisture it needs and deserves this winter.
Say Goodbye to Wool
While wool can keep the skin very warm, it is also irritating to the skin. Instead, dress in warm layers made of cotton when you get cold. This will also help to protect the skin from the damaging impacts of cold wind.
Invest in a Quality Lotion
The best thing you can do for your skin is to keep it moisturized. The most straightforward way to do this is by using a thick lotion. It’s harder to apply in the winter when you are already wearing many layers, but it’s the most important time of year to keep on it. Apply it before going outside and before going to bed.
Many dry skin sufferers have found relief through moisturizers like Sween24 which is great for moisturizing the skin and lips. Lactic Acids help to seal in moisture. Try to seek out moisturizers with added lactic acid to help even more. Atrac-Tain® has lactic acid and is very soothing to the skin.
Turn Down the Heat
The higher the heat, the more your skin will dry out. Keeping your home and car slightly cooler will help to keep the skin from drying out as much. Add an additional layer of cotton clothing if you get chilly.
Keep the Humidifier Running
To help combat the dry heat, have the humidifier running in the room you spend the most time in. Any little moisture that is in the air is getting zapped out by the heat. You will want to compensate for this by having a humidifier replace it and then some. You may even notice less of a sore throat.
Shake Up Your Bathing Routine
Try to keep your baths and showers no longer than 10 minutes. We know, it doesn’t sound as enjoyable as a nice, warm bath on a cold day, but it does dry out the skin. The temperature should also be lukewarm, as hot water dries out the skin. Also, you should apply moisturizer immediately to your skin after exiting the shower.
Take Vitamin D
Sadly, with winter we have to say goodbye to frequent sun exposure. A lack of vitamin D has been shown to cause problems with the skin. Adding a supplement like this to your diet can help combat dry skin and eczema. Consult with your doctor before doing so.
Drink Plenty of Water
To stay hydrated from the inside out, drink enough water each day. You should be drinking around 8 eight-ounce glasses of water each day. Dry skin is inevitable in the winter, but don’t think there isn’t a resolution! When you start getting the sore, itchy feeling, reach out to ACG Medical Supply for help.
The holidays are a wonderful time to come together with loved ones. It’s lovely to be able to reminisce about the days of the past and make new memories to bond over next year. As enjoyable as these times are, the holidays and the winter season, in general, can pose added risks to older adults’ health. Here are some ways to stay safe this season and enjoy all the festivities have to offer.
Spend time with loved ones wherever you can.
Sometimes the winter season can get people feeling down. Seasonal affective disorder can impact anyone. One thing that can help with this is being around others. As you age, it can become difficult to gather with loved ones in the same capacity as the days of the past. This doesn’t mean you should go without seeing loved ones, you only have to be a little more creative. If it’s difficult to get out of your home, have others over to your space. Even if your space is smaller than what it used to be, you can still have family over. It’s an opportunity to make new traditions and memories that are just as special.
Enjoy the holiday treats in moderation.
By all means, have a couple of cookies or some slices of salty meats and cheese. Just don’t overdo it. If you have a health condition like diabetes or heart disease, you can put your health at risk by indulging too heavily on these items. Set yourself up for success by always having healthier options available that are just as enjoyable.
Ask others for help.
The holiday stress can take a toll on anyone. Don’t try to do it all yourself. Reach out if you need help with anything from wrapping presents to shoveling. In fact, if you are trying to shovel for a long period of time, you may want to reconsider. The heart has to work twice as hard to keep you warm while you exert yourself in the snow. Consider taking frequent breaks or reaching out for assistance.
Decorate safely.
It’s fun to get out twinkle lights this time of year, but it can pose some fire hazards and fall risks. Use newer lights that have been safety tested to not overheat. Also, take care to lay cords and extension cords in a way that will prevent tripping hazards.
Prevent illness.
Winter is not the time to relax on germ precaution. It’s cold and flu season culminated with exposure to more people. Be sure to always wash your hands before touching your face or eating. Do your best to avoid coming in contact with others who may be sick.
Dress Warm.
Hypothermia is a very real winter threat. Always dress for the season whether inside or outside of the home. You never know when a fall may happen or when your car might stall. Be sure that you’re dressed to withstand a longer period outside should the situation arise. If you’re worried about finding yourself in this situation, you may want to consider the Guardian Alert 911 and the Freedom Alert for safety. Additionally, dressing warmly can help to prevent sickness. Keeping yourself safe is a priority year-round, but it can often be forgotten about in the mix of the holidays. Get the products to help keep you stay safe before the accident occurs from ACG Medical Supply.
Diabetes. A word no one likes to hear when reaching a diagnosis, especially when you consider all of the responsibilities that come along with it. Even though diabetes seems like a scary word in the beginning, it is very common and can be managed when you are aware of what you need to do. In honor of National Diabetes Month, we’re here to talk about what diabetes is, how it affects you and what the different types are.
Diabetes Defined
Diabetes is a disease that impacts how the body uses blood glucose (sugar). There are a few main types of this disease for which there is no cure, but many ways to manage. Diabetes affects approximately 30 million people in the United States with nearly 1.5 million more people diagnosed every year. It is a serious disease that requires many changes to your health, diet and lifestyle.
The Effects of Diabetes
Diabetes affects your life in many ways. From the beginning, typically before diagnosis, you can find yourself feeling the following symptoms:
- Urinating often
- Feeling very thirsty often
- Extreme fatigue
- Blurred vision
- Bruises that are hard to heal
While this is a short list, the symptoms vary depending on the type of diabetes that you are diagnosed with. After diagnosis, you will be monitoring your blood sugar regularly and will get A1C blood tests regularly each year to keep track of your levels. Many other things are common depending on the type and severity as well such as: weight loss, change in diet/healthy eating, regular exercise, possible insulin therapy, etc.
Types of Diabetes
There are many types of diabetes, but the most common are type 1, type 2 and gestational. While they are all types of diabetes, there are many differences that distinguish them from one another.
Type 1: Also known as insulin-dependent diabetes, type 1 diabetes generally begins in childhood years. It occurs when the body attacks the pancreas resulting in a damaged pancreas that cannot produce insulin. Treatment requires taking insulin, frequent testing of blood sugar levels, careful meal planning and daily exercise.
Type 2: This is by far the most common type of diabetes accounting for nearly 95% of all cases. This is often caused by being overweight, and can include people who do not produce enough insulin or who are insulin resistant. While there is no cure, this can be controlled through weight management, nutrition and exercise.
Gestational: This type is less common and affects 2-10% of pregnant women whose pregnancies can lead them to become slightly insulin resistant. This generally resolves after pregnancy, but can lead to a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later down the road. This can be controlled during pregnancy by tracking and planning your meals, daily exercise, controlled pregnancy weight gain, and possibly medication if necessary.
While most people are aware of diabetes, not many are aware of the lifestyle changes and complications that come with it. ACG Medical carries diabetic supplies and equipment that can help you control your diabetes. If you are one of the 10% of the world’s population affected by diabetes, reach out to ACG Medical Supply to see what we have to offer you to help manage and eliminate your pain.
Have you been keeping an eye on your cardio levels? Maybe even thinking you need to get a little more exercise in? If this sounds familiar, you’re in luck and you’re not alone. Nearly 75% of people are not getting the amount of exercise that is recommended for them to keep a healthy lifestyle, but it’s not too late to turn that around! We have just the tips and tricks to get those extra steps in to ensure that you’re getting the exercise you need and will be well on your way to a healthier you in no time.
How much exercise do people need?
We all know that exercise is good for us, but how much should we be fitting into our daily schedule? ChooseMyPlate.gov recommends the following amounts of physical activity for people of all ages below:
Children (2-5): Physical activity is generally safe for everyone, but there is not a set amount for children of this age. They generally have more energy and will have shorter bursts of activity which is normal. If you are concerned with the activity level of your child, contact your doctor today.
Adolescents (6-17): Children and adolescents should get 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day. Many times, this age of people are getting the amount of exercise needed from school programs and sports. It is important to encourage your children or grandchildren to keep involved and active in activities that keep them moving to promote a healthy lifestyle.
Adults (18-64): Adults should do at least 2 hours and 30 minutes each week of aerobic physical activity at a moderate level OR 1 hour and 15 minutes each week of aerobic physical activity at a vigorous level. A good way to fit this into your week is to exercise for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. This allows you a couple of rest days in there for when you need a break or maybe don’t have the time that day.
Elderly Adults (65+): Elderly adults have similar recommendations for exercise, but have more flexibility as they should exercise as able. If you are unsure of what you should do to keep active, check with your doctor and ask for recommendations on what would be best for you.
What can you use to help you get your exercise in?
There are many different things that one can do to get the right amount of exercise daily. Below are some options for people of all ages to utilize.
Apps: There are hundreds of apps that one can download on their phone to help keep them on track while exercising, tracking time and even showing exactly what exercises to do. Whatever you’re looking for, try searching for it on your phone or looking up what apps might be right for you. You’re bound to find something you love and can stick to!
Walking aids: If you have a disability or are getting older, you may want to look into walking aids to ensure you are staying safe while getting your exercise in. ACG Medical offers a variety of walking aids to keep you safe! Check out our walkers and rollators here.
Equipment: There are many different things that you can have in your own home to avoid getting a gym membership or walking outdoors in dangerous conditions. It might be a good idea to look into getting a treadmill for walking or other equipment such as yoga balls, small weights and even bands that can be stretched out to keep from injuring yourself. While these are just a few guidelines and tips to help you live an active life, there is an endless list of things you can be doing to stay active. One simple tip would be, when in doubt, walk it out. Walking is essential in life and is a simple way to get your exercise in! October is National Physical Therapy Month! #ChoosePT is the APTA’s hashtag that they use to help bring awareness to why physical therapy is so great and all the benefits it brings. In today’s blog, we’ll talk about products that can help you move forward through physical therapy, why PT is a better alternative over other solutions and what PT can do for you. Read on to see why you should #ChoosePT.
What can I do to speed physical therapy along?

Why is PT better than pain pills?
The number of side effects you can experience from opioids and the potential addiction you can face are enough reasons to make you think twice before taking pills for pain. Depression, overdose and addiction are the three common issues we see when it comes to taking opioids. Physical therapists treat pain and heal your body through movement while partnering with patients to improve or maintain their mobility and quality of life. Opioids just block the pain signals, so you aren’t getting better and will be less motivated to do physical therapy if you don’t feel any pain.
How can PT help me?
Physical therapy is a great choice for so many reasons! It can help you reduce the need for opioids, avoid surgery, improve mobility, aid in fall prevention, improve balance, help with recovery from stroke and so much more. If you’re experiencing any kind of pain issue, physical therapy can probably help in some way – and you may not even realize it! Physical therapy isn’t just about helping you heal a pulled muscle, there’s orthopedic, geriatric, neurological, pediatric, wound care, vestibular, pelvic floor, decongestive, cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation – just to name a few!
We offer a multitude of products to allow you to improve your quality of life. If you have questions about what would be right for you, feel free to contact us today!
